Synchronization and Channel Estimation for Filtered Multitone Modulation

This paper deals with synchronization and channel estimation in a filtered multitone (FMT) modulated system. An FMT based system differs from the popular OFDM scheme in the deployment of sub-channel shaping filters. Although the synchronization problem in OFDM is well understood, in an FMT system it presents several challenges. The approach herein presented is based on the deployment of appropriate training sequences. We first recover symbol/frame timing and carrier frequency in the time domain. Then we perform channel estimation in the frequency domain. We assume the deployment of simple linear sub-channel equalizers. We study the performance over several frequency selective fading channels as a function of the sub-channel equalizer complexity.
